Undergraduate Research Opportunities
The Department of Atmospheric Sciences encourages all students to complete an undergraduate
research project prior to graduation. Department policy dictates that students are
either paid for the time that they spend doing research for a faculty member or that
they receive college credit (as a technical elective or capstone experience), but
not both. Research opportunities are usually restricted to juniors and seniors.
Students interested in performing an undergraduate research project need to arrange a
meeting with one or more of the faculty members to find out what opportunities might
be available.
Additional opportunities exist through the University of Utah Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). UROP provides assistantships up to $1,200 for any first-time UROP student who assists
with a faculty member's research or creative project, or who carries out a project
of her/his own under the supervision of a faculty member. Students may apply for
a UROP assistantship for any semester (summer included), and are eligible to apply
for a one semester renewal of their assistantship. Renewals for any semester may
be funded up to $600. All UROP students are strongly encouraged to participate in
the Undergraduate Research Symposium which typically takes place in early April each year.
