Dr. Zhaoxia Pu Recognized for Accomplishments

Zhaoxia Pu     Dr. Zhaoxia Pu, professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, was elected as an AMS Fellow from the American Meteorological Society. AMS Fellows are elected for those who have made outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years.
New AMS Fellows that are elected each year make up about two-tenths of a percent of all AMS Members. Congratulations on this recognition Dr. Pu!

Professor Zhaoxia Pu also participated in the  “13th Annual Indonesia – U.S. Ocean and Climate Observations, Analysis and Applications Partnership Workshop” in Jakarta, Indonesia from June 27th through the 29th of 2018. The series of workshops is dedicated to enhance the collaboration between the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (aka. BMKG) in ocean and climate observations over the Maritime Continent (MC) region, a critical area that has significant influences to weather and climate (e.g., the Madden-Julian Oscillation) in the U.S. and around the world. The theme of this year’s workshop was “Improving Seasonal Predictability and Marine Weather Services Capacity Over Maritime Continent.” Professor Pu was invited to give a keynote presentation titled “Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for Weather and Climate” during the opening ceremony. During the workshop, Professor Pu also made two scientific presentations on topics of ensemble forecasting and regional numerical simulations with data assimilation.

To help BMKG build and enhance the capability of climate and weather prediction, Prof. Zhaoxia Pu offered pre-workshop training lectures to BMKG scientists on June 26 2018. The title of this whole day lecture (with four sessions) was “Numerical Prediction and Data Assimilation for Weather, Climate, and Geosciences,” which was well received by many attendees in BMKG.

Congratulations to Dr. Pu on these recent accomplishments and recognition!
